A poem that takes a straighter look at love.
Too many love poems exist in this world
That say exactly the same things.
But how else to say “I love you”?
“I love you”, a simple phrase indeed,
Yet it holds so much sway in life.
So much power in those two pronouns and a verb.
And yes, love is a form of power;
And yes, it can be used for good or bad;
But yes, it depends on the person.
Who am I to say that I’ve never abused love?
Indeed I’d be lying if I admitted no pleasure,
But all who’ve been entangled by the web of love are no different.
It’s common, this “mistreatment”, but mistitled it is.
It’s not abuse, it’s showing who we really are.
To refuse the hedonistic, is to refuse the title “human”.
And lo, is it not in the pursuit of betterment?
Like a dog who’s been ignored for a time,
No better is the time when his instincts are fulfilled.
But to return to subject, we ignore this.
We make love complex and intricate where it needs not be;
Metaphors and similes wrapped in enigma and mysteries.
Sometimes we miss the idea that “I love you” is the greatest phrase.
We try to impress with flourishes of words, but we forget:
Love is compassion and trust wrapped in locked lips and scratched backs
