Love Whispers is a poem dedicated to a great man who suffered with Alzheimer’s disease. Loved and remembered.
My father developed Alzheimer’s disease and continued to deteriorate with this illness for about three or more years. He has since gone on to be with the Lord, but, I still remember his valiant fight, which was often plagued with fear and confusion, because he often didn’t know those around him. Honor and love goes out to my Mother, who has since joined him, but cared for him until his passing. I wrote this poem as a way to see the world as he must have seen it – ever changing, unfamiliar and a little frightening.
Today I awoke in a different place.
I know no name.
I know no face.
I turn my head to hide a tear.
Gentle like a dove’s wing
I feel her near.
Not expecting such love
To wipe away my fear.
As she combs my hair
And rubs my hands,
A wisp of honeysuckle is in the air.
Muffled voices come through the door.
‘She needs these pills and 4 more.’
‘She didn’t sleep much last night.’
‘Not sure how much longer she
can survive this fight.’
I cry out, so they all can hear,
‘I am not ill.’
‘I don’t need a pill.’
‘Leave me alone.’
‘I JUST WANT TO GO HOME!’
‘Please calm down.’
I heard her say,
In a loving voice
With a gentle tone.
‘Mother, Dear, you are at home.’
And as I closed my eyes to sleep.
‘I hear my child’s whisper near my ear.’
‘Lord, let her remember me tomorrow.’
‘But, should she not recognize my face
Or even know my name.’
‘Let her awaken in a special place.
Where she knows she’s loved.’
