My first attempt at an English Sonnet.

Young lover’s passion leads to commitment

Promises made of their eternal love,

Ceremony is filled with sentiment

Overseen and blessed by the One above.

United through life they will make the climb

A bright burning flame of lasting passion;

Sure that their love will stand the test of time,

Pledged while dressed in the highest of fashion.

Alas, the sad truth shall in time be seen,

Feelings that once were strong will take their flight

When love’s yellow flame loses its sheen

And the ‘perfect’ one is no longer right.

For youth cannot see the distant future;

Commitment, not love, must be the suture.

    I don’t know from sonnets but I know when I like poems. This one was beautifully composed and even I understood it. Sad and too often true.
