This was written on July 20, 1969 as Neil Armstrong went walking on the moon. I was on board a diesel submarine in Pearl Harbor, HI, and as the crew went wild watching it on TV, I went up to the bridge by myself and wrote this.
In this age so advanced
We must never stop to rest,
Has anyone ever chanced
To wonder if it?s best?
In our hurry to get ahead
Do we lose the beauty in life?
Mother Nature seems nearly dead,
Killed by hunger, war and strife.
Placid, you take it all in stride
With your head so reverently bowed,
Could it be shame making you hide
Your peaceful face behind a cloud?
Forgive us please, we?ve gone too far,
This brain-race no longer is right,
You?re at peace with the morning star
While we continue to fight.
How can you maintain such lovely grace
After we?ve gone and stepped in your face?
