Last weekend half marathons were run around our harbour and in my son’s home town in Japan, where he actually took part and finished in a personal record time.

From far and wide the runners came

All proudly hoping to make their names

On Eastbourne’s seafront and harbour streets,

And hoping last year’s times to beat.

*

In gale force wind and the biting cold

Their efforts they would not withhold,

And watchers stood to give them cheer

As loud applause was volunteered.

*

And in Japan where the milder air.

Helped runners for their race prepare,

My son he stood so tall and proud

Sending smiles out to the crowd.

On starter’s guns without delay

All athletes soon were on their way

To pound the streets their hopes all raised,

The daunting distance, no one fazed.

*

With panting breath and beating hearts

All were so glad they’d taken part.

On both sides of the world the race

For worthy charities was taking place.

And with the finishing lines in sight

Excitement began to reach such heights.

All runners eager to achieve their goals

And gain some funds for needy souls.

very different commentary to what is considered a boring sport to watch. Thanks a lot Christine. All the very best to your son. I am a cyclathon/walkathon guy and not a marathon person. :)

Aww good for them. I can only run about 5 miles before dying. It’s a great achievement to run a marathon and an ever greater achievement to help someone at the same time. Good for them!

Two activities happening in two different sides of the world and both have the same goal. I agree with the others – you presented news in an interesting manner. Majority of us would have written this for Newsflavor.

  • DemonDogZack on Mar 12, 2011

Erin told me you had a son in Japan and I heard about the Earthquake in school. Erin told me you said your son was okay so that is god news. I liked your poem.

  • jimbob1 on Mar 13, 2011

CR…what a wonderful way to bring events in two distant, separate countries under the same umbrella…this was a great job and a tremendous read…hope the pounding feet in the Japanese marathon wasn\’t too much for the sub-marine earth plates that led to this most recent disaster…Wonder how many marathon races this summer will double as fund raisers for relief needs such as those growing in Japan and othe parts of the world…I voted I like this one…thanks and take care
