No one really means it when they say they’re alright.
When we talk it’s like
The whales in the ocean
And the planes in the sky
Fall silent to listen
Though the clamour
Continues like we never
Told a lie when we said
We’re both just fine.
I’m tired of farewells
And I don’t want goodbyes
Because when we say hello
It’s like a trial:
Meaningless unless
We tell the truth.
But I wonder if
You even realise
That I’m asking you
For help, because
I know you understand.
Don’t you understand?
I only hurt myself
When the whales in the ocean
And the planes in the sky
Hold their breath to listen
But are disappointed
As, like before, I lie
Through my teeth and
Say I’m perfectly okay.
