It’s not what we say as a Christian that makes a difference. It’s what we do; what we are.

Do you know, and do you understand?

You say you are the salt of the earth;

Salt should preserve, and not corrode

Create in me a thirst for truth

But do not burn my open wounds.

You say you are the light of the world;

Light should attract, and not blind

The moon’s soft glow draws my gaze

But my eyes squeeze out the glaring sun.

Do you know, and do you understand?

You are the runner beside me;

This race is long and winding

And deep are canyons I see

Your feet must show me a straighter path.

The winners circle no man can spy,

But the running is clearly seen;

Self-service leads me to folds unknown

So show me a race well won.

Do you know, and do you understand?

You are the sermon I see

Principles are fabric, not plaques

Your tapestry, woven of choices made

Forms the carpet for my understanding.

I may want to see Jesus;

So show me His gentleness and grace,

Let me feel His acceptance and care,

It’s in you that I search for His face.

    Ah, this is a really poignant and powerful piece, Maranatha! As pure poetry, it is really well-crafted, and as a message to those of who claim the mantle of Christ followers, it raises powerful and important questions.
