Satirical poem about the travel/transport chaos and political fallout caused by the last three weeks of snow and ice, especially in the Central Belt and along the M8 and M74 motorways, leading to the resignation of the Scottish Transport Minister last week.
Bone-chillingly cold,
Snow on ice on frost,
Twelve inches deep -
No exaggeration – Dundee!
Near the North Sea!
Worse in Perth – 18 inches
To two feet deep.
Day 10 of the crisis:
Traffic chaos – Central Belt,
M8 at a standstill.
Cars, lorries 10 hours’
Stationary, no hope of
Progress, burning fuel.
“Are we a 3rd World Country?”
Media headlines furore,
Blizzard of texts and emails.
Airports closed, trains derailed
By the white stuff. Can’t do
Snow in this country.
Yet they cope in Scandinavia,
Alpine Europe, Canada.
“Worst December since 1963;
First class response…”
Shrugs our Transport Minister,
“We will learn lessons.”
Who to blame? Who takes control?
No official enquiry – pass the buck.
Communication breakdown;
Scotland for now slithering back
To normal – until the next time…
