I’m celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary today. How did we make it this long? Read on and find out… My grand mother used to say, "It’s more than a notion to deal with some people!" I didn’t know what she meant back then. I sure do now!

Notion (n)

  1. a mental image; general idea
  2. a vague thought
  3. a belief; opinion; view
  4. a desire; inclination; whim
  5. a plan or intention

It’s more than a notion

To stay and stand fast

An act of sheer will

Determination

To compromise and keep the peace

I pick my battles

With uttermost care

It’s more than a notion

To put the disappointments

Up on the highest shelf

Lay aside the emotional turmoil

I can’t reach them

Without considerable effort

So it’s not worth the hassle

I never thought it would be easy

But I was not prepared

For the twists and turns

Blind-sided and flipped

Upside-down

It’s more than a notion

To love you

First of all, congratulations. Many marriages don’t last for 25 hours leave alone 25 years. Any secrets? I am waiting for a long article from you and your hubby on this. Talk him into collaborating on one wonderful piece to celebrate that wonderful quarter of a century.

I can give you the secret in three words: Compromise, compromise, compromise! And as stated above, you have to pick your battles; not everything is worth fighting over. :)

I’ll talk to my hubby about a marriage article, but since he has never been a big fan of my writing (one of those things we decided not to fight over, but rather I just do it and he doesn’t try to convince me otherwise), it might be an uphill climb.

You are definitely right Andre, compromise is a big part of it and I have said before that it is bigger than love for love may get you into marriage but compromise is what keeps a couple going. Loved it.

@lillyrose – I did marry very young (22), but thanks!

@LEO – Thanks again. The secret of my success? Don’t sweat the small stuff and don’t give up fighting for the things that are important to you.

Congratulations on your 25th Wedding Anniversary ashan.
Marriage isn’t always easy. Too compromise is to give and take, and that’s what Marriage is all about. Enjoyed your poem.
