She put her hands to the earth and whispered an oath…
She put her hands to the earth
And whispered an oath
It sounded sacred and final,
And then she hurled the mound:
And grasped a little in her hands
Drenched it in cool water
From a spring nearby.
She applied the dirt to her face
As if to camouflage in it
And then I watched as she
Lay down.
She spread across the leaves
And closed her eyes slowly.
A tear ran from her face
And her primrose mouth
Quivered shut.
She put her hands to her chest
As if engrossed within a silent prayer:
And then she pointed towards the moon.
It silvery beams turned scarlett
And she trembled as she lay very still.
In the silence of the earth she trusted.
And the trees which sheltered her.
The water which sanctified her soul
And the ground which carried her.
