Poem/story about forbidden love, and how the heart can let you down….

Michal was his name, ( pronounced Me-kale)

was well known and respected,

he was on top of his game,

to Maria he was certainly attracted…..

Had known each other a long time,

her family thought the world of him,

had been with her dad on a mountain climb,

Maria and Michal had a lot in common…..

Saw a younger version of her dad in Michal,

but she was listless and bothered,

here was a union that couldn’t fail,

wasn’t sure what she wanted,

Michal was patient and understanding,

was caring and keen to wait,

he was kind and endearing,

willing to abide for whatever it takes…..

Many a women offered their hand,

and their hearts he set alight,

Maria knew he was a fine man,

she just couldn’t think right…..

Something was holding her back,

she missed talking with her mother,

her mum had the knack,

and knew her like no other…..

Spent alot of time with Michal,

dining trips and being together on the farm,

Michal was a gentleman and pal,

he had charisma and charm…..

They communicated where it mattered,

came from the same background,

though he didnt make her heart flutter,

their union would be very sound…..

She wondered what other options were there,

knew she’s no spring chicken,

didnt want to grow old with the bed bare,

Michal was a fine option she reckon…..

In the deep recess of her heart and mind,

saw an image of someone she didnt know,

who dosen’t have a dollar or dime,

and read books with nursery rhymes…..

Had only spoken two words to her,

lives in a cabin with no phone or power,

dont even know his name,

bathes in a river instead of a shower…..

She asked why is he on my mind,

what is happening to my heart,

we’er only met two times,

and we come from worlds apart…..

She reasoned correctly this is not right,

push this strange old man away,

put him far away from my sight,

Plan with Michal for a better day…..

This was the proper and best thing to do,

but there were no convictions in her words,

If only that mountain would give a glue,

she wanted to fly away with the birds…..

She knew where the answers laid,

her father had told her many times,

those words of wisdom that he said,

we all have mountains to climb………………….to be continued…………….

Hi Ladydryle…thank you for your lovely comments, and yes parts of it is true, taken from another poem/story “the old hut”,that was true.but if you read from chapter 1 in the introduction it tells all about this poem/story,its an ongoing saga….

I will be awaiting the next part. I was going to ask what ladydryle asked. Were the people you based it on your parents? It sounds like the kind of relationship people had in past generations.

Yes in part it is Tina, and also upon my own personal life….especially my love life, but as you will see there is also some Maori mythology, some history that did happen or consequences of what happen.and its against a farming rural backdrop to which I was raised. Most of what is written is about me in a round about way,my background, like shearing sheep, riding horses, pig hunting, working on farms, and a high hill I use to go and climb alot.hahaha not the one in the poem though…..anyway hope that helps you get the gist of the poem/story…

The choices of love in the right and wrong places, a hard decision for any female to make; may happiness find her in the journey she makes; wonderful words of art; I can’t wait to see how happy you let her be in the following chapters. This story is intensity at its finest my friend!

Wow! This is an amazing and so well done story, and the fact that you weave history, poetry, and personal experience in it is just pure genious!
