I’ve been laid low with a touch of flu, which made me think back to when the family was at home and there was no time for Mum to be ill.

I think I’ve caught a cold

My throat is really sore.

My head is feeling woolly

And my nose is red and raw.

I need a day in bed,

But the family’s not impressed.

They’re shouting for their dinner

And they want me up and dressed.

*

I’ve drunk up all my Lemsips

And my tissues have all gone.

I’ve borrowed my Hubby’s hanky

But that won’t last me long.

I’ve staggered to the kitchen

And burnt their bacon and their egg.

It serves them right if they can’t let me

Have the day in bed.

*

I’ve dished up all the food

Between the sneezes and the coughs.

I’ve even found some apple pie

Which they no doubt will scoff.

I’ll sit there barely eating

And look so ill and sad,

Then hopefully they will notice

And feel just a little bad.

*

Not much chance of that, LOL.

No, no no – go back to bed. We did enough of that when the children were little. I wish I were your neighbour so I could bring you some soup. Rest!

  • pearl2010 on Jan 9, 2011

On this kind of weather winter season it’s nice to have soup often. Take care Christine.

Oh Christine you do have a wonderful way of bringing memories back that everyone can relate to. I chuckled at this one as it rings so true. Now you can lay in bed at your leisure and recover soon without the kids around lol. Feel better soon Christine.

You could spread the virus if they give you no rest. The piece is so expressive, I get the bouts but controlled it this year so far.

  • jimbob1 on Jan 9, 2011

CR…Such is the special, sacrificial role of motherhood…we do take it forgranted with seldom a word of appreciation or gratitude. You are prompting me to write an article…thanks for your inspiration and hope that you are soon up and feeling better through the collective support of your friends and family both at home and here on Triond as well as having an imaginary bowl of JM’s soup…of course I voted that I like this one…thanks again and take care…

  • Atanacio on Jan 9, 2011

Moms do– but they fight through it :) dads just fall apart :)

  • clay hurtubise on Jan 9, 2011

    Let me at ‘em!
They should bring you breakfast in bed. The nerve of them!
    Good piece.
    Thanks,

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Jan 9, 2011

Very true. Mothers take care of everyone else and sometimes abandon themselves. Wish you quick recovery.

  • Ima Vee on Jan 9, 2011

Wonderful poem… Many mothers and wives share the same sentiments. Take some rest… Mothers deserve to rest…

    Get well…:]

  • Christine Ramsay on Jan 10, 2011

Thank you all for your good wishes. I am fine now and I am sure now that my sons are grown up they would be much more sympathetic. At least I would hope so.

Lol. Your family should cook you dinner
cos when you’re sick, you get thinner
It was nice of you to cook for them

Christine, do you also remember the days when, as teachers, we struggled off to school because we felt we had to. Just think of all the germs we spread!

  • 1hopefulman on Jan 10, 2011

    lol Great sense of humor!

  • Ruby Hawk on Jan 11, 2011

Christine, I remember those days, too. Moms are not supposed to get sick and if they do they must grin and bear it.

  • Julie McMurchie on Jan 11, 2011

So true, so true. Suffering a bit myself this week, but dinner needs to be served. They’re on their own for breakfast.

  • Tulan on Jan 11, 2011

    pity us poor mums.

  • Brewed Coffee on Jan 12, 2011

Ohhh that’s just too bad. I know how it feels to have nasty colds. Rest and lots of fluid are the best….plus that soup from Janette. I hope you are feeling alright now. The family demands a lot from moms….but see, they are not invincible and sometimes, they do get sick.

  • CA Johnson on Jan 14, 2011

I loved your poem. I have a cold too because so many people kept coughing around me. I do not usually get sick anymore, but now I feel miserable.

  • M J katz on Jan 15, 2011

I had to laugh as I read this because it brought back so many memories when my kids were still living at home. Maybe we’re just thought of as being indestructable! :)

  • shakugan123 on Jan 16, 2011

    I feel like having colds

  • mark ramsay on Jan 20, 2011

Ah Mum. We weren’t that bad. You are funny.

  • S A JOHNSON on Jan 20, 2011

So true! I don’t remember my mom being sick when I was kid, but of course as am now older, I know better but it’s amazing that unless it was something to put them in the hospital, it’s just not important when you’re a kid.

  • Anuradha Ramkumar on Jan 21, 2011

Very true…I did not realize this when I was small and my mother used to work with wheezing, but realized when I became a mother.

  • BRENDAKSHELTON on Jan 22, 2011

    Well written

  • tonywriter on Jan 30, 2011

:) :) very well written poetry mam, please take care of youself and don’t catch cold

  • Lady Sunshine on Feb 2, 2011

Without mom, the household would fall apart.

  • Erin Miller on Mar 8, 2011

I can’t really relate. When I lived with my Dad if my Stepmom ever got sick my Dad would take over the “mom” chores. Then when I was living with my Mom the same thing would happen until they split then we were told to leave Mom alone and fend for ourselves unless we were kids in which case she would make dinner and that was it. Still lovely poem. I hope you are feeling better.
