This poem was written after the tragedy of one of my good friends who also happened to be a co-worker and the fiance’ of my cousin and father to their daughter. He was coming back from a funeral on his motorcycle and a jeep cut him and he flew into a pole head first dying instantly. This happened on May 26, 2006 and my life has never been the same since. I wrote this poem for his daughter Giana who was 18 mths when he died. I put myself in her position as to what it would be like growing up with a father who has passed away.
The day I become potty trained my mom will smile with glee
But I won’t have my dad to celebrate with my mommy and me
Three years later I’ll start school
My mommy will walk me through the door
I’ll be sad and scared
But my mommy will reassure
My first picture drawn
The day I learn to write my name
Where is my daddy to see all this?
He can’t even teach me how to play a game.
Father daughter outings
I will never get to enjoy
My daddy he’s in heaven
So I cry and mommy will buy me a toy
She’ll try to ease the pain
Even though I’m too little to understand
Still looking for my daddy
The tall charming and funny man!
Off to high school now
Off to my first date
These are things my daddy will never see
And that is what I’ll hate
Graduation day will come and go
Mom will show how proud she is of me
Off to college, I know
Because I know that’s where Daddy would want me to be.
Everyday I think of my daddy
The one I never got to see
Briefly in my life
Why did you have to leave me?
The day I walk down the aisle
Will sadden me the most
No man could ever take your place
Dad, I prefer your ghost.
Holding your picture at night
Letting you know about my life
Never losing sight
Always trying to do what’s right
Taken away from me so suddenly
I don’t remember anything before
All I wish is you could be here with me
Just that and nothing more.
