A poem to my father on Father’s Day. I love you Dad!
I am a fortunate One,
Blessed by birth.
My father has made an impact
With silence and with care,
Through deep set
Sharp blue eyes,
Teaching me how to read
The dictionary,
The right way.
He emphasizes
the manner in which
he speaks
My mother’s name,
Anne.
He found something new,
a definition for me,
And told her,
He knew it would dawn on me
eventually.
And soon I’d recognize,
My own authentic voice,
In language to portray,
These past years
of remembering.
How to expand thought,
And lengthen into idea.
I listened to him,
As I held tight to another,
blinded by the sun,
out in left field.
Thinking proudly,
Daddy will praise me,
no matter what.
Even when he heard me yell,
and saw me kick away,
Wanting to be free,
As a bird.
His patience never swayed,
Perhaps because he knew
I’d soon return to be,
An eloquent woman someday.
Through change
and change again,
On my own,
Constantly creating something new,
As an eternal spirit through
and through.
And as I look inside,
My heart knows
Who I am.
Still to this day,
My Daddy’s Girl.
