I had the idea for the beginning of this poem in Darjeeling, India in 1998, but then I couldn’t find the right end for it until May of 2006, by a lake in Colorado…
Long still my heart’s been a-wandering
Over mountain and river and glen
Uncertain as to just where I will go
Much less to the whys and the when
I hope when I get there I’ll know
That I’ve found what I’ve searched for so long,
Burning inside with desire
To find my heart’s one true song
To sing in exuberance with the birds
As they cry out their joy from the trees
To dance to their free melodic tune
As it floats to the sky on the breeze
There, in that place beyond my dreams
My heart will find its true rest
Gazing about with wonder and awe,
It will fall silent within my chest.
