I wrote this poem in a cultural diversity workshop at my community college. To my enormous pleasure, I was asked to have it published in the school newsletter that same year and happily accepted. It isn’t my normal style of poetry, but perhaps you’ll attain some insight about my own character.
I am from a warm place,
A friendly place,
An accepting place
A family of hand holders who see me as a treasure in a beautiful world
I am from the woods
I can make fire
I can become lost, and smile
I am from a place where each season is at its ripest
A place where mountains cradle me in a forest of evergreen
I am from the ocean, its constant rhythm giving me momentum throughout my journey
I have the passion of a French, the spirit of a Native American, the ambition of a German, and the diversity of an American
I am from a belief, the belief that I can make the world a better place by simply being me.
I am from the world.
I am beautiful, I am at peace, I am Emily.
