A poem about autism.

MY NAME IS R. J.

Hi, my name is R. J. and I am 3 years old,

Most times I’m misunderstood when I don’t do what I’m told.

You might not understand me and most of the things I do,

Out of the blue I might say “Hi” a thousand times to you.

I have to cover my ears when daddy turns up his favorite song,

Loud noises are one of my fears; I really don’t know whats wrong.

I am good at memorizing things like Songs & Cartoons & such,

But remembering where the potty is? Really not so much.

I like to laugh and giggle and run around and hop,

But when other kids come around I usually always stop.

You see, I really don’t understand it and I really cant explain,

But I like to do things on my own – by myself and with out change.

I like my daily routine, and get afraid of doing things different,

You might call my name a thousand times and I’ll act like I didn’t hear it.

But I want you to know, don’t worry because I’m actually quite smart,

I could grow up to be like Einstein or closely play the part.

I know my letters, numbers, shapes and colors better than most kids my age,

But I have some trouble talking – I often seem withdrawn and dazed.

I’m usually loud and active, and have trouble sitting still,

It’s because I see things different, so I get overly thrilled.

But I am so very special and kind, and I love my mom and dad,

Daddy’s working on his patience, and mommy is sometimes sad.

My brother gets frustrated too but I hope he will understand,

That I love him too and in time, together we will stand.

So please don’t treat me different or say mean things to me,

You’ll find that showing me love and patience will always be the key.
