A children’s atlas has opened up a whole new world to me.

My New atlas
I got a new atlas for Christmas,
For me it was quite a surprise.
It was a first atlas aimed at children
And of many great facts it comprised.
What a strange thing to give me I thought
As I reviewed the pages inside,
But there was the whole world laid at my feet
With a instruction page to act as a guide
The colourful plates were amazing.
Explanations were so easy to read.
It taught me far more than I already knew,
And of all the changes that had been agreed.
I learnt of the seven new continents,
The five oceans and the many seas.
I found the capitals cities of every land,
And that most people on Earth are Chinese.
I learnt that Europeans have changed the world,
Despite their continent not being vast.
Artists, writers, scientists and explorers,
Their talents quite unsurpassed.
I found that Asia is the largest continent,
And that America is divided in two.
That few people and animals inhabit Antarctica,
And Oceania has many islands to view.
I learnt about mountains and grasslands,
And that Saudi Arabia not a river does it own.
That there are many great lakes in America,
And all Africa’s great deserts are shown.
There was so much information at my finger tips,
It kept me busy for more than a week.
Why can’t adult books be so appealing?
Then my general knowledge might not appear so weak.

Oh Christine, you said that so well; we can learn so much when things are given in a format that is simple and straight forward.
    Great job.

I’m envious of your gift because I love things like this, too!:)
Isn’t it funny how we are able to learn so much from the things made for children? Even from childrens’ TV shows in the mornings!
    Maybe we’re kids at heart…^-^

  • Christine Ramsay on Jan 5, 2009

I agree with you Muriel, and it seems we are not the only ones to be kids at heart. Thank you all.

I loved it..children and stuff in there age group can teach us so much.My 2 small grandchildren have taught me so much and lets not forget Dr.Sues.But it wouldn’t hurt to get my girls a book like that..nicely written .

Christine, at writing group yesterday someone pointed out that a story can be written about just about anything. “I’m sure someone can look at that pen sitting on that pad of paper and write a story about it,” one guy said. You proved that and further. You were able to write a poem (even harder) on what many would consider a simple object. Very well done!

You out did yourself this time.It just goes to show that we can learn something new and interesting if we look for it.
