The two young women wore fatigues

They walked among the armed troops

Later that day the women took a shower

Outside

A fifty-five gallon drum of heated water above  their heads

Four water proof ponchos 

The walls of the shower

A guard was posted outside the shower

The armed young men milled about watching the women take their shower

The ponchos covered the women from their knees to their shoulders

All the armed young men watched

The young poet sat on a small hill

His rifle cradled in his arms

The two young women were just ordinary American girls

Laughing and talking with each other as the young soldiers watched

These two young American women went around to different camps handing out candy and talking

And listening

They did a lot of listening

That was all

When the young poet waved at the two naked young women  

They waved back

It occurred to the young poet that these two young women were safer here

Then if they were on many dark streets in the United States

And the young women knew it
