This is a poem about one of my elementary friends. We shared a love of nature and always would go camping. We were the ones who let the fish go that we were supposed to eat for dinner and sat still for hours trying to pet a deer.
There I saw her, sittin on the porch swing
Humming with the crickets, camly chirping
A book lays sprawled open in her lap
Our golden retriver closes her eyes for her evening nap
Bright orange and gold leaves dance with the wind
The sun hugs the surface of the water like a long lost friend
Aromas of maple immerse the air
Deer pounce through the fallen leaves without a care
But she is all that I can see
Occasionally her warm brown eyes close and she lets out a sigh
I thought she was happy but she is sad and I don’t know why
I think when her eyes close she falls into a fantasy
She becomes part of nature and flows like a breeze
Like a fish spending everyday in the water, swimming
Shining scales, fluttering fins, small but still genuine
Like a bird with the gift of flight, going anywhere she dreams
Making even the grumpiest people smile when she opens her beak and sings
Like a squirrel moving fast, frisky, and free
Snapping its fuzzy tail, climbing to the top of every tree
So I watched her, curious about the next move she would make
She looked at me then walked toward the lake
She waded in all the way up to her hips
All the while singing a beautiful song with her lips
And her hair, soft like fur, was tickled by the wind
And when the water touched her, I swear I saw scales sprinkle her skin
