Appearance of an oil platform in the Firth of Tay off Dundee, an engineering work of art, comparing it to the temporary visit of Titian’s Old Master painting, Diana and Actaeon, to the city’s gallery/museum.
Jacked up on tripod spidery legs
The oil platform towers over Dundee -
Dominating the skyline like a squat
Buddha in contemplation.
Cranes, metalwork lattices, helipad, derrick -
Reaching over 400 feet top to bottom,
Rowan Gorilla VII – king among silverbacks -
Inspiring more interest and affection
Than unlovely wind turbines.
But this colossal primate is
Just a transient visitor, bound for deep-sea
Bacchus field. A temporary reminder of
Bygone days when Scottish engineering
Ingenuity built Tay and Forth bridges,
Launched the QE2, kick-started North Sea
Oil exploration. Two months to view this
‘New Master’, as impressive as visiting Titian,
Before its permanent showing offshore.
