From the small bugs we step on as kids to the millions of surplus pets euthanized every year.

You cannot save them all
so why even try?
No matter what you do
many will sometimes die.

Animals and plants
creatures of the earth.
People, plants, and bugs
what are the lives worth?

Each one of us has killed before
Each one of us will die.
Will we ever wonder
Who, when, or why?

Why is it that we kill to live?
For food or just or fun.
Bugs and cows and such,
bare hands or with a gun.

Some we try to keep alive
fighting for their life.
We use all our efforts
or end them of their strife.

Kittens and Pups
born each year.
With births in the millions,
the numbers are too dear.

We cannot save them all
although we often try
many are put down
or even left to die.

Death is natural,
or so they say.
Until we kill again and then
look the other way.

That ant loved its life
the little kitten too.
Each time we must remember
not just why, but who.

Jeez, now I’m going to have to think twice before killing the ants that invade my kitchen. Well done, Brenda!
