Watching and wishing…
I watch you attend to their needs
while each of them lies in your lap,
you brush their tails so careful
then, gentle around floppy ears,
your sing-song voice is lovely
as the nonsense of your speech
quiets a struggling pup.
From across the computer room
your beauty still moves me to smile,
you laugh at some of their antics
as chuckles express warm delight,
the love is so obvious
in memories of our times,
I turn away briefly, with tears.
You look up to catch my long gaze
and light slowly fades from your eyes,
you ask what it is that I write
in a voice become flat and cool,
I draw a breath to give answer
and almost tell you the truth,
then say it is nothing at all.
