I am an animal lover, a bit of a hypocrite, I eat animals, but set flies free catching them and releasing them out of my house. There are some cruelties we truly can live without. Read the whole poem before you think you know what the point is.

As you sit

waiting to kill Bambi’s mother,

Waiting to feel her heart

die in your arms,

Or maybe to watch

the bird fall from the sky,

Retrieved in a dogs mouth

while the body is still warm,

Taking a living life

with a single shot, maybe two,

Remember this…

remember this..

That I am an animal lover

my soul weeps for the lives lost.

Remember this…

certainly remember this…

Of all the cruelty that exists

of all the needless pain felt,

Of all the death

and all bloodshed and killing,

The noble hunter,

who hunts for meat,

Is a far, far, better man

than he who runs a factory farm.

I agree to that. After all the world’s oceans used to be filled with fishes until canned tuna manufacturers brought fishing vessels to catch tuna and sacrifice other species who gets in the way 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Most of our kind have the habit of killing lesser species more than we could feed upon.

I like your distinction “the hunter who hunts for meat”. Unfortunately, there are still those who hunt for trophies, or only keep the choice parts of the kill. I grew up on a hard-scrabble farm where if we killed something, it got used up, not wasted.

I only agree with hunting as a means to feed your family not for fun. What fun is there to kill a beautiful animal?

I am torn about the subject of hunting. When I was young we lived off meat that was hunted and fresh fish. Yet, I could not imagaine looking an animal in the face and being able to aim a gun at it and shoot it.

Factory farms are more cruel than most people realize, as most are so far removed from rural life.

Factory farm is an oxymoron. Most farmers actually felt some compassion for the animals they knew were going to slaughter.

Very good point B. We are- by nature- hunters!

I do take issue when somebody calls hunting a SPORT.
I have to respect eating from a kill, I don’t each much meat but do feel guilty when I do. I hate killing anything–although there are a few people—
