A poem praising the wonderful functions of a GPS.

Global Positioning System,

You connect the earthly with the heavenly

A modern compass

A car’s lighthouse

Mapquest has nothing on you.

Your voice is as reassuring as a psychotherapist’s.

You are an unremittingly infallible conscience,

Guiding my every move

Making my every decision

At the precise moment I reach the crossroads.

You are the observational half

Of my daydreaming self,

An English major’s calculator.

With you, there are no worries about

Miles and minutes, left and right turns.

With you on my windshield, nothing is unattainable.

Your beeping cuts through

The engulfing fear of the unknown roads ahead.

You are a lover’s hand,

A friend’s encouragement

The North Star.

From you, I derive

A sense of safety and confidence.

You steady the thrashing streets

So I can see a clear route.

And so,

I take you with me wherever I choose

And put my fate in your microchip,

Knowing that satellites are orbiting my world

And base-stations are standing dutifully

For me to receive the space born signals

That put their hands on my back

And show me the way.
