This poem is dedicated to the flower Anemone…
It opens its petals in a sublime smile of fragrant welcome
For the flowing invisible breeze, hence the name
Having sprung from the tears of Aphrodite mourning Adonis
Or turned scarlet from blanch by the blood of Adonis
It symbolises everlasting love and dying hope, both
It closes its petals to prophecy the rainfall
Having diagnosed the impending pregnancy of floating clouds
They close at nightfall and within them sleep fairies
A nymph loved by Zephyrus was transformed
By jealous Flora to this flower, leaving it at the mercy of Boreus
And withering it before the arrival of gentle spring wind
It is the symbol of anticipation, of expectations
It sprang up from the blood shed by Christ at Crucifixion
And blooms before arrival of Zephyr to build
The anticipation heralded by its arrival
The scarlet and white blooms are termed flowers of death
When moving through their fields one held the breath
Lest its poisonous fragrance enter the nostrils
They symbolised sickness and were said to guard against them
This forsaken bloom of beauty has elixir of love in flimsy veins
And redolent affection in its sweet breath
As it share smiles of benign benevolence with the world
Embracing its love the gentle breeze with soft caress
In invisible fingers of affection…
