A poem about a character named Slim from the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
They said Candy’s friend was barely a living thing
They said to shoot the canine; end its suffering
Crippled and old and as rotten as mold
It was time for its end
Death would be warm; but living on, that’s cold
And so it was done
For Slim said so
Shot in the head, collapsed on its toes
Whatever Slim says, goes
Curley’s wife’s broken neck, a ranch-wide thriller
They said Lennie was the cold-hearted killer
So Curley rallied up, formed a lynch mob
It was time to shoot Lennie’s guts
Curley went without a tear nor a sob
Lennie never meant to hurt a living thing
George wanted to conclude him, prevent his suffering
Mentally disabled; tragically mislabeled
It was time for the end
All their dreams; the story’s themes
Now it was done
And Slim knew so
Shot in the head, collapsed on his toes
Slim understood the friendship’s woes
