The sounds from yesteryear.

Cantre’r Gwaelod (The Lowland Hundred)

Cantre’r Gwaelod was a village in Cardigan bay in Wales. It has been a long lived legend sometimes known as the ‘Welsh Atlantis’.

One version states that due to a well named well maiden named Megan neglected her duties and this caused the well to flood and to this day remains under the waters of Cardigan Bay.

Another version names two brothers who were also princes were in charge of locking the sluice gates. one brother was known to be a drunkard and her neglected his duties thus allowing the whole village to be swept under the waters.

The church bells of Cantre’r Gwaelod are still said to ring out to help others of the dangers of the seas.

Did I hear those bells toll

from the church of Cantre’r Gwaelod ?

Did I hear the baritone voices

from the congregation of Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I hear the white wolf a-calling

from the mountains of Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I hear the Skylark’s song

from the forests of Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I hear the milkmaid’s chatter

from the meadows of Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I hear a family’s love

from the heart of Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I smell the deep rosy hue

from the gardens of Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I sense the mother’s love

from her hearth on Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I sense a love so true

from young lovers of Cantre’r Gwaelod?

Did I feel the wrath of the sea

as it enveloped Cantre’r Gwaelod?

But I know I hear great songs

from the souls of Cantre’r Gwaelod !!

A wondrous picture I see

of the angels of Cantre’r Gwaelod !!

These angels live on forever

Their spirits never will be gone.

They bless us with eternal love

From each word of their song.

Sit back and rest assured

If you hear those bells so clear.

Their mission is to save all others

Of this you need never fear.

So let us take a moment

to say a prayer or two !!

For these bells may one day

Toll loudly just for you !!!

We hear

Cantre’r Gwaelod

Open your hearts and feel

The love and the care still surrounds

The angels play with each star in the sky

Those bells will toll for you and me.

Each soul is eternal

Cantre’r Gwaelod

We hear.

The rush of the sea

Swept away to her bosom

The church bells still toll.
