This poem is about having sensory experiences on the beach. It came to an end when I was forced to open my eyes.
I was lying on the beach with my eyes closed.
The sun rays caressed my body.
Overhead, I could hear birds chirping,
And the wind swept grains of sand all over me.
I was contemplating the wonders of nature,
Endeavoring to be one with my surroundings,
And just wanting to relax in peace.
But, was this possible?
I laid not on a

stretch of beach.
On this, miles and miles of brown sand were tourists.
They came to soak up the sun, walk dogs, and jump the waves,
And some even played volleyball.
For once, I wanted to be at peace with nature.
And, to commune with it.
I felt the howling wind,
And grains of sand as they swept on and around me.
It was all in all extraordinary sensory experiences.
Feeling, but not seeing!
Hearing, but not tasting!
There were lots of distractions,
Yelling and chanting!
I could sense persons splashing in the water.
I could hear a volleyball game going on.
There was festivity in the air.
Birds tweeted as they were fed.
Chattering were by those that fished,
And, some were boating.
Still, I refused to open my eyes.
I continued experiencing the beach in a new way.
All activities seemed to be getting closer and closer,
As the day wore on.
Someone was even searching the sand with a metal detector.
But I held out and wouldn’t open my eyes.
That was it!
A volleyball struck me plumb in the face and I was forced to move.
My newly created world vanished.
