Poem written for Dr. Roddie R. Judkins (1941-2007),
Hearts
Are so often misunderstood
But His
Was so evidently
Good
I knew at first sight,
He was beautiful.
And I said so in so many words
To my mother one night as she rested.
She smiled and just glimmered a while
As I admitted I might have liked
The hot chocolate at the Waffle House that night.
My little eyes didn’t see then,
While he was doing her dishes
That his love would soon
Overwhelm
All our senses of logic,
And take over our home
We both fell in love with my father.
Those dishes he washed
Became labors of service
To all in need of his help
His “yes” was a firm one
And his work reflected
His true self.
The best part of all
Came near the end
During sickness, and strife, and pain.
He reached for my hair
And slowly ran his fingers through it
As if to speak “Joni, I love you”
I knew then,
That he wanted to dance again.
I can’t wait to dance with him there.
