A poem about a middle of the night conversation.

He asked me if I still loved him
At 3:30 during a sleepless night
Hours earlier I had told him a bedtime story
Hours before that I had hugged him so tight
I told him I loved him and that he needed more sleep
He said his stomach hurt
I reminded him to breathe
He asked me why you had done that
I replied I didn’t know
He asked me if I still loved you
If I had been sad to see you guys go
I spoke of my devastation
He caved in and told me his
We spent the next few minutes commiserating
Wishing things hadn’t gone as they did
He started to sound tired
So I told him time for sleep
He asked me again if I still loved him
I responded that my love was so deep
He said he loved me too and finally drifted off
I prayed his dreams would be pleasant
And that he wouldn’t give our issues another thought
I don’t know why you freaked out
But for our family I’ll move on
Every parent makes mistakes
One falters while the other stays strong
