Some facts which may help with remembering the order of the planets.

Image via Wikipedia

*

Nine planets in our solar system

Travel in orbits circling the sun,

Which sits in the middle observing them all

But knowing it can never be outdone.

*

First comes Mercury which is really quite small

And is covered with craters and rock.

It even has ice at its north pole

Which seems strange since it’s ever so hot.

*

The second planet is rocky Venus

It’s covered with a yellowish cloud

Made of a poison very like sulphuric acid,

And of its brightness it’s ever so proud.

*

Then very close in size to Venus

Supporting life and similar in girth,

Comes along our favourite planet

Yes, you’ve guessed it, Planet Earth.

*

Mars, the Red Planet comes fourth.

It suffers from vast storms of dust.

It has moons, known as Phobos and Deimos

And it looks like it may even combust.

*

Jupiter, the fifth is the largest by far.

Of moons it has quite a lot,

And of course it is also famous

For its huge and swirling red spot.

*

Next come Saturn, Uranus and Neptune

Their initial letters spell the word SUN.

If you remember that’s their order

Then half of the memory battle’s won.

*

Finally comes the dwarf planet, Pluto

With an atmosphere and moons of its own.

No longer regarded as a planet

As so little about it is known.

*

So these are our nine so called planets

Formed out of recycled atoms in space,

All drawn together by gravity

And something we’ll never replace.

Hey Christine. Really nice flow to this. I like the way you cram so much information into a small space but without it feeling like overload. Quite a skill. The SUN acronym I am sure will come in handy at some point.
