A relationship across the airwaves with the grandson we have never met.
Smiling eyes melt my defences.
He gazes at my now familiar face on screen.
Twelve thousand miles separate us
But he holds out his chubby arms for caress.
Not one moment of his life have we missed.
From the moment of his first cry,
Then his first laugh and his first struggles to cross the floor.
We hear his chuckles of delight as he encounters
new and wonderful playthings.
We see his inquisitiveness as he pulls himself onto his feet to investigate a new sound.
The love he shows for his mum and dad is apparent
as they encourage him in all he tries.
Soon we shall hear his first words and see his first steps.
We shall not be there with him in person,
But we shall be there all the same.
