I wrote this for my father. He has been a truck driver my whole life and is the best man I have ever met.
(Verse 1)
As a little boy I looked up to him
He seemed much tougher than I could hope to be
He was a living superhero
Could do anything he wanted for my brother’s and me
There comes a time in every young boys life
When perceived reality cuts like a knife
It takes time for a son to figure out the truth.
(Chorus)
It was his job to love us
Teach and guide us
Show us what a man’s supposed to be
He had to hold our mother
And try to be a partner
While being all that he knew how to be
He loved us over the road
Provided a home
And taught what was expected of us
(Verse 2)
Growing up I did not understand
The hardness it takes to be a man
He wasn’t there as much as he would have liked to be
But he was driving with all speed
Providing for our needs
Thanks to him we never wanted for anything
(Chorus)
It was his job to love us
Teach and guide us
Show us what a man’s supposed to be
He had to hold our mother
And try to be a partner
While being all that he knew how to be
He loved us over the road
Provided a home
And taught what was expected of us
(Verse 3)
A man has a responsibility
To supply the needs of his family
This ain’t always easily done
But a man must learn to do what’s right
Simply just because it’s right
A man can’t simply quit and give up
(Chorus)
It was his job to love us
Teach and guide us
Show us what a man’s supposed to be
He had to hold our mother
And try to be a partner
While being all that he knew how to be
He loved us over the road
Provided a home
And taught what was expected of us
