I wrote this for one of the local nursing homes. Having worked in the health care field, I feel strongly about this poem. Being placed in a nursing home does not have to be a "death sentence."

Each of us has a job to do and it’s difficult at times

Each shift and department seems weighted down

with trials of the day’s events

Working together as a team can lighten the load

however, discouragements occur

if each one did just a little here and a little there

Keeping just the bare necessities in sight

some days require that much more, while other days that much less

Put a smile on your face to ease the stress

We’re more than a mere facility

We stand in place of family

we do what other’s cannot

so that the quality of living isn’t quite forgot

From simple Activities of Daily living

to being parent, teacher, friend

let us not forget the reason that we’re here

Easing the burdens of their family, dear

it takes a special person to do the work we do

showing respect, kindness and love are the glue

not to just the residents, to co-workers as well

allow your inner light to swell

Remember why you’re here

and who you are

Because in the residents eyes

We’re the “supper stars”

They get frustrated and upset

We are there to be their safety net.

Great write. I also worked in a Nursing Home when I graduated from high school. It was a fantastic learning and teaching experience. I seen things there I wish on no one, and I was glad to support or be a friend when needed.
