Peyronie’s disease is a condition characterized by the formation of plaque or hard lump on the penis. Plaque may form on the top or at the bottom of the penis and in the layers containing erectile tissue. This disease begins as local inflammation and can develop into scar tissue that hard.
CAUSE
Many experts are convinced that the disease is plaque formed after the trauma (eg, beatings) that causes local bleeding inside the penis. The damaged areas have a slow or abnormal healing due to repetitive trauma and the least amount of blood to the area.
If this situation continues for many years, the plaque can develop into a strong fibrous tissue, calcification, or deposition occurs even calcium. Some experts say that this disease is an autoimmune disease.
A number of drugs have been mentioned as Peyronie’s disease side effects:
– Anti-hypertensive and cardiac medications (beta blockers) – anti-seizure drugs (phenytoin)
– Drugs for multiple sclerosis (interferon).
But the possibility of Peyronie’s disease from consuming these drugs is very small.
This disease occurs in 1% of men. Most often strikes middle-aged man, but it can also be found in younger men and older men. About 30% of patients experienced the formation of fibrous in other body parts (eg feet or hands).
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms develop slowly. In severe cases, the hardened plaque leads to reduced flexibility of the penis, causing pain and when the erect penis becomes curved. Over time the pain will be reduced but because the penis is curved, the patient had difficulty in sexual intercourse.
In milder cases, the inflammation will improve without significant pain and curved penis. Plaque on the top of the shaft of the penis causes the penis to bend upward, the plaque on the underside causes the penis to bend downward. Some sufferers have a plaque at the bottom and on top, forming a curve, and the penis becomes shorter. Pain, a curved penis and emotional stress can cause the patient did not have sexual intercourse.
Fibrous tissue may also spread to the erectile tissue (corpus cavernosal) so there is no erection.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis based on symptoms and physical examination.
TREATMENT
Peyronie’s disease can disappear by itself after a few months. Can also be given steroid injections to the affected area. What more often happens is that the fibrous tissue must be removed surgically.
Surgery can cure the disease but sometimes causes the formation of scar tissue and worsen the situation. Surgery can also cause impotence. Surgery is only done if the penis is curved so that people unable to have sexual intercourse.
