And our poet story concludes.
The snow lies deep, and was tricky on foot
And the wind was tireless it would not stay put
Not a single star glimmer in the black vale above
Snow crunching in silence to the thoughts of my love
It seemed as if the old road would never show
My mind would wonder and fears would grow
I started thinking that the blizzard maybe covered the road
Out of the white blanket a stone highway fence then showed
As much as I tried and believe me I tried
I couldn’t flee the thought of the people that died
I slap my knee to dance mostly to hums of my favorite song
Save for the unpleasant sense of loneness that came on strong
I did my best to forget the startling speculations
And I put to the test my limits of resignation
The night air seemed to get cooler and colder
Though the faster I walked I couldn’t get warmer
My feet were like ice,
I lost almost all sensation in my hands
Through my trip I thought twice
to turn and go back to the old man’s
A breathe was a difficult thing to take in
As though I was climbing the highest mountain
Instead of traversing an old country way
The feeling it forced me to stop for a stay
I looked up the road and to my relief
I seen the headlights of a veering mail jeep
I was so happy to know these guys will go
No matter the weather rain, hail, sleet, or snow
It was speeding, and yet quietly squealed
The snow being nearly half up the big wheels
It looked dingy and dirty and strangely so lofty
A sudden suspicion had flashed upon me
Is this the mail truck the old man had mentioned?
Could he pass by? Then my death will be destined
The jeep it came up and sped round the bend
I threw up my hands, yelled “please let me in”
The mailman passed me by at full steam
I feared I was lost and he had not seen
I screamed and yelled, jumped and I hopped
At that very moment the mailmen had stopped
I ran like the wind to the passenger entry
And the driver just watched me like a sentry
