The folly of youth.
A child in the pilot seat
Of his father’s brand new car
Watch his mind wander
As he navigates worlds afar
Clumsily he fondles
A switch and then a lever
His sense of purpose strong
Excited to a fever
But parked atop the hill
The child jumps into mission
He feels the time is right
He doesn’t need permission
A hand upon the brake
Released into a launch
Salute’s dear papa bravely
Left standing looking staunch
The child before horrific
Predictable disaster
Is boldly self amused
In animated laughter
But then he hits a hump
Which jolts his comprehension
A mind of empty dreams
A heart of apprehension
“The brake, hit the brake!”
Yells the father to the child
Now splaying out his arms
Like a monkey’s in the wild
“Daddy, Daddy help!”
As he apes his father now
Then gripping tight the wheel
Hoping he will live somehow
He turns, and then he pulls
And he twists, then a shout
All is grim and he is hopeless
“Let me out, let me out!”
The world that’s all about him
A stream of rapid hues
The accidently curious
Now praying god rescues
“If only I was grown!”
If only he did listen
“If only I could know!”
If only he did listen
“If only I could stop!”
If only he did listen
“If only I could…”
Why did this child not listen?
A teen in the pilot seat
Of a brand new lover’s flame
Watch his mind wander
As he steers his heart the same
Clumsily caressing
A touch and then a gaze
His sense of purpose strong
Excited to a haze…
