Villanelles are a form of poetry with strict rhyming patterns and repeats. Written in English for more than two hundred years, they originated in continental Europe.

Somewhere past mounds of merchandise
in moulded depths of plastic land
there we are told the magic lies

Roll-up! Roll-over girls and guys
there’s all the racket you can stand
somewhere past mounds of merchandise

Through ranks of troupers in disguise
once cash and credit cards are scanned
there we are told the magic lies

There’s plenty range for dogs and fries
to wallet shrink and waist expand
somewhere past mounds of merchandise

Queue here to cross the bridge of sighs
three fingered flick of padded hand
there we are told the magic lies

As stomachs sink and pulses rise
diverted by the marching band
somewhere past mounds of merchandise
there we are told the magic lies
