I work in a large building with four doors, and several outside sitting areas, but only one is designated smoke-free. Signs are posted in multiple places in this small area, but someone is always lighting up.

I live in a world of smokers
They’re smoking everywhere
I can’t find a smoke free area
As cigarette smoke fills the air

I don’t hate them because they’re smoking
Let me stop and explain
But the smell of burning cigarettes
Causes me migraine pain

I go to areas designated smoke free
To get away from the smell of smoke
But smokers are lighting up next to me
As if the signs are a joke.

Our job has four doors to go in
And three are just for the smokers
So why is it the sitting area for nonsmokers
Is inhabited by all of the “jokers”?

Maybe you should print this and put it on the wall! I’m an ex smoker and the smell makes me feel ill, so I can sympathise.

I follow Louie with this one. Very good poem.

…Hi Judy, smoke makes me sick. Perhaps
posting the poem somewhere would make a
difference, we can only hope. I don’t mind
if people want to color their lungs black,
but the color of my lungs should be my choice.
Great poem, great cause. take care.

Louie, Glynis, Icy and Quiet, thanks for your support. Louie, congratulations on quitting. I understand that it is very hard to do so. Quiet Voice, I agree, my lungs should not be damaged by someone elses habit.

    Take care and God bless.

Smoking is now banned in all public and work places in England. This has also been the law in Ireland for years. Maybe America could consider this?

  • Judy Sheldon on Aug 10, 2008

Anne, we actually have a Burger King near here that they smoke in (anywhere they like). But at least I know, so I stay out of there. I think the U.S. is considering it. They have a lot of segregated areas, but most are not upheld. A non-smoker was assaulted in Dennys for making a comment to someone who smoked in the nonsmoking section. I’m not saying don’t allow them to smoke. They have their rights, but don’t violate mine.

I know what you mean. I can’t stand the smell of smoke either. It makes me realy sick. I am so happy that most public places around our area forbids smoking, and most people respect the signs.

It’s nice when people respect other’s rights. Thanks for reading and take care.

    Hi Judy,
I was a smoker for 38 years and was always considerate of others. There were times when I almost felt guilty for smoking around those who did not. I seldom smoked in public places and when they started to ban smoking in stores, malls, hospitals, and other public buildings…even though I smoked at the time I thought it was a good idea. I can honestly say that in the two and a half since years since I quit I haven’t been offended by other smokers. I know what you are saying though, anyone who smokes need to take other people into consideration.

  • Judy Sheldon on Aug 15, 2008

Darlene, I’m beginning to wonder if it is more prevalent here than in other locations because I run into this daily and sometimes many times a day. I feel like the odd man out. lol

Thanks for reading and take care. Congratulations on quitting.
