This isn’t a competition in the strictest sense of the word – there is no prize other than the opportunity to compose poetry in a unique way and experience a diverse range of poetry from other online poets.

Much inspired by Philly Dreamer’s Fibonacci Poetry Challenge I have decided to issue my own mathematically inspired challenge. If you would like to create your own poem based on this sequence simply submit the link in the comments section below.

The Sequence

The form your poem will take is based upon a triangular sequence. Below is a full description of the thought process behind the form, but to put it simply each line of your poem should have the number of syllables as follows (each verse has 3 lines):

Verse 1 – 1, 3, 6

Verse 2 – 10, 15, 21

Verse 3 – 6, 3, 1

(The number of syllables in each line reflects the number of dots in each triangle shown below, with the first line forming the first verse and the second line forming the second verse. For the sake of mathematical completeness the sequence on the first line should then be reversed for the third verse (three points to a triangle, three verses).

My Attempt

She.

She knows not

What I would be for her.

//

I would die to know her loving embrace,

Endure such pain to understand her thoughts and feel her feelings,

To know but one thing of her, who glanced but once and now walks me by, whom I may not meet.

//

It is me who knows not.

She is now.

Gone.

    Interesting – I’ll have to give this a whirl, methinks. Nice that you’ve taken on Phill’s poetry mantle.

    I like it. I was looking for another mathematical form to use. This one has a nice feel. Would you mind if I switch the second verse to 10,15,10. I think it will make the form look better.

    Controversial – messing with the maths! I suppose I can make a concession since you inspired the project, but I can’t speak for everyone!

    Very cool!

    You naughty boy, Daniel Crompton – you’ve not written a comment on my hard-worked piece for your triangular sequence challenge. Come on – tell me what you think??????????????????

  • PruandMe on Feb 3, 2012

    Gotta try this!

    Liked your poem, regardless of the challenge!

    Interesting. Will try in a minute.
