I’ve seen some great poems on the net.But I’m no good at writing poetry. What do I have to do to write a poem? Inspiration?.Let’s explore some ideas.

Why am I a dummy at writing poetry? How do I make it interesting?

Well, lets face it, you got to have a thing for writing, which is like a recipe, combine feelings, emotions the right imagery together. That’s a challenge..Personally,  I’m not emotional enough to link words with feelings. I got no idea at writing poems. What exactly is a poem? Well, a bunch of sentences put together, that sound good, and attract your attention, I suppose. Let’s see if I can succeed at such an art with the following piece. I know that there’s women out there that write really beautiful pieces of art.Well, I tried my luck with the duck in the first piece for Triond readers as shown below:

Poem 1 ( First poem to the world)

I feel like a dummy

writing this

So I’m scared

and I run to mummy

She tells me to put on my dummy

I get back writing this

before I get sick

of writing all this

Be Brave, I tell myself

You can write it,

so don’t listen to your mummy

and throw out your dummy

Poem 2 ( Trying to get the imagery and feelings here)

Flowers in my hands

blue, red, pink and yellow

the rainbow smilling at me

smiling at our strong love together

shy girl of the mountains

snow on your hair

beautiful blue eyes

shiny blond hair

I dream of you always

my flowers remind of you

of our happiness

so we can get together

under the sunshine of love

forever together

There you go.  We live in a pragmatic world, where words are used for practical rather than aesthetic purposes. But, poetry is art, just like music or painting, the world is just not for use, but to admire as well. You can read some ‘poems’ and get some inspiration from the professionals.

  • TIP: You can read other poems from sites like Triond, or go to the local library to read other people’s work to try to get an understanding of how poetry works if you need inspiration.
  • Look at Paintings and works of art. Looking at paintings like the one below, can inspire us, with feelings that speak to our inner selves. This will create ideas within us, which will help you write poetry.Like they say, an image is worth a thousand words.

Poems and music

Poems are somehow like music.

  • Make them sound good, make them rhyme with each other, give it a story and rhythm, and above all, you need a gift.
  • Imagine being a singer, without having a singing gift? You’ll be in big trouble. Same with poems, you need some intuition here. It’s trying to connect words with our hearts. Our feelings connecting with the sounds of words. That’s really hard to do.

How does one spit the dummy and write something decent?

There are plenty of good books on how to write poetry. That’s how I taught myself to write short stories. You can get the books at a bookstore or take them out from the library.
