Reaction paper to the Poison Flower.

The poem “Poison Flower,” by Mary Coleridge, is a very interesting poem. The meaning behind the poem catches a reader’s attention and makes a reader think about what the author is trying to convey. In the beginning of the poem, the author creates a tone that is both cold and eerie. The poison flower that is repeatedly mentioned in the poem brings a cold atmosphere for the other flowers in the garden. The flower is said to influence the other flowers by poisoning the garden. I think this part of the poem is very interesting because people can relate to this some way or another. There are times when someone brings bad influences to a group of friends creating a dangerous and harmful environment. This experience has personally happened to me. I became best friends with a girl in about a month. I felt like I could relate to her and trust her; however I was wrong. She influenced me and my friends to do things that we would never do, such as lying to my parents and friends. I noticed that this was happening and I stopped communicating with her. Just like Mary Coleridge finally got rid of that poisonous flower that was harming the whole garden, I got rid of a friendship that was heading in the wrong direction. However, my feelings also contrast those of Mary Coleridge. By the end of the poem, Mary Coleridge mentions that she does not enjoy walking to the garden anymore because the poisonous flower is no longer there. She regrets her decision of removing the flower. When looking back at my decision of ending my friendship with the girl, I do not regret it because I think I made a good choice. She was not a trusting or loyal friend. I would never want to go back in that direction again or have another friendship like that. In the poem, it seems like Mary Coleridge would not mind having another poisonous flower in the garden. Overall, I feel like Mary Coleridge and I share some similar feelings that are displayed in the poem.
