A poem I have created based upon Carol Ann Duffy’s conceit poem "Valentine"

Not a sweet kiss or a gentle hug

I give you this poison.

It is a weapon, in the right hands

It promises pain and suffering

If you do not respect it’s power

Here.

It will make your heart burn

Like fire spreading through your body

It will pierce your mind, clear your thoughts

Until it is your all

I am trying to be calm,

But not a moment goes by or a thought in my mind passes free of your poison!

I give you this poison too

It’s bitter taste will leave you confused, wanting more

As we are

For as long as we are

Take it.

It’s fierce pulse will shrink to gentle beats

If you like

Lethal.

It’s strange intoxication will make your heart burst

Until it releases it’s grip.
