A poem on the festival of Pongal (14th January), which is celebrated by Tamil people all over the world. Celebrated for four days. Bhogi (13th Jan), Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal.

Pongal – The Tamil New Year

Pongal is the celebration of a successful reap,

Expecting the coming times will give them a leap,

The previous day is called the Bhogi,

The day they burn the scrap that are old.

Before dawn they drum and sing by the fire,

They sit around the bonfire and get over the cold.

The Tamil month of ‘thii’ brings the New Year,

They worship the Sun for bringing them the cheer,

They cook and share a variety of food,

They thank the nature that was never rude.

They next day they decorate their cattle

That worked in field,

Without them they can’t imagine

A year with flourishing yield.

The final day they go out

And enjoy with family and friends,

The joy of Pongal will be there without doubt,

In this changing world, Pongal makes a sense…

Happy Pongal, I love to read of different traditions and celebrations. This one feels very special for some reason. Maybe because my own upbringing was simple with celebrations that I loved so much as a child. I could feel myself among the people here.
