Awakened by a train in the night…

Vibration. Slow thunder
spreads across the floor,
cheap motel art begins
a soft shoe tap on paneled wood.

First cry of lonely warning
raises memories of home.
Second howl; rolling isolation
rushes nearer in the night.

Rumble and rattle evolves
to rhythmic thumps,
ring of iron wheels.

Crescendo! Bright defiance
roars itself to apogee,
falls away again to lonely.

Rumble. Thump. Rattle. Ring.
All begin to fade away,
as one last howl of longing
reaches out across the dark,
soothing soft return to sleep.
