Written by a daughter about a sufferer of Alzheimer’s Disease for my father.

I wish you could tell me what’s inside

Why my Father has been forced to hide

I ask flesh of the man, his face I know

The mind that belongs – where did it go?

Are you safe in your memories?

Why are loved ones your enemies?

Your carousel mind goes around

Why do you forget new things when found?

Each action you take is confused and slow

I’m saddened and I want to know

Where has your mind taken you today?

I want to rescue you and show you the way

I watch, I know sometimes you forget me

You struggle with a tied down memory

I am here Dad and I’m still inside

The daughter Alzheimer’s chose to hide

My father had Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer when God chose to take him last August. My husband’s mother has Alzheimer’s. At times memory plays tricks on them, and this is one of the forces that drives me to research into preventative health to deter this.

A good friend of mine also had Alzheimer’s. It is the saddest thing I know.

Alzheimer’s is such a sad disease. I used to work for a lady who had it and it broke my heart to watch her struggle to remember things. Her favorite phrase was “ooohh darn! I should know that”
    Very nice poem Glynis.

Alzheimer’s is a terrible, terrible disease. It robs us of our lifetime. Wonderful poem. This is a great idea. With each new story I read I will try and read an old one. Read it forward, friends.

Glynis…great write. I went through this with my grandmother. She did not have alzheimers but Multiple Sclerosis. It first paralyzed her body and then towards the end caused lesions on her brain that affected her memory, etc. This poem captured those frustrating, sad feelings of those who watch their loved ones suffer and lose those abilities and characteristics they once took for granted.

My dad’s friend has it and he used to play with me as a baby. He still thinks I am a toddler. It is so painful to see him like that. I hope things improve.Oh God be with you all.
