Perhaps the world somewhere over the rainbow is not what we had hoped for.

Somewhere over the rainbow is not the place expected.

There are no bluebirds there. Only vultures.

The rainbows so bright and colorful are a curtain of deceit.

They veil a reality that is dark and deeply flawed.

On the other side is only emptiness.

The darkness lurks in the looming abyss.

Somewhere over the rainbow is not the place expected.

Dorthy didn’t know it because she was sweet and innocent.

But Judy knew…

Yes. Judy knew…

Because she was damaged goods.

    I loved the pictures and think you captured the dark underbelly of Hollywood, and how Judy’s innocent Dorothy contrasted with her tortured persional life. Kudos

    Innocence is Bliss, good entry!

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    of dreams and expectations;
    through our fantasies we go,
    past our life’s anticipations;
    Lies a pot of treasured gold
    or a golden pot of lies;
    where the destiny we’re sold
    either lives for us, or dies.

    When the fog of dreams has lifted
    and we see the rainbow’s end;
    then the pot of gold is sifted,
    for each man’s worth that it portends.
    As we count the golden treasure
    for the riches that it pays;
    Dare we count it as a measure
    of how we’ve spent our earthly days?

    Wonderful subject choice for the challenge. A great contrast as already said.

    where the dreams that we dare to dream really do come true

    what a load of crap

  • Mark Gordon Brown on Nov 30, 2009

    we should make our own rainbows and stop chasing others.

  • ElGringoDiablo on Nov 30, 2009

    I can just picture you rocking that out Nate.

    Man, I was going to write exactly what Bull did; now I don\’t know what to say.
    Seriously, I dug,, as did others, the apparent dichotomy, though there may have been some overlap, of someone as troubled as Judy Garland playing sweet and innocent, a tribute to Garland\’s talent.

    Sorry about the double, but I meant what I said and I meant what I said.

    Nice one for the challenge Nate. It never is what its suppose to be, if you can make any sense out of what i said because i can\’t. Well done friend.

    wonderful work Nate….

  • BradONeill on Nov 30, 2009

    Well that was bitter.

  • maranatha on Dec 1, 2009

    So sad – an immense talent wasted. There are many of them. Garland is just one that we can so plainly see. Well done, my friend.

    I wonder if Kermit agrees too :-) Seriously that was really good. I liked that a lot. Great use of the challenge words bloke. Thanks for playing dude.

    Judy Garland charmed the world with her singing and dancing..when she reached middle-age, her life became plagued with personal problems..when she made her final appearance dressed (ironically) as a clown..a stagehand was quoted as saying “no more yellow-brick road.” Have you read the book ‘Under The Rainbow” bud? An intimate and interesting read about the vulnerable all-American sweetheart turned self-destructive..an excellent piece for Duff’s challenge :-)

  • N. Lloyd Andrews on Dec 3, 2009

    Hehe…TBH…I am not a Judy Garland fan. I never did like musicals.

    She just came to mind while I was writing the piece. I just know that the studio bosses kept her loaded up with speed so she could keep going and going.

    The contrast between the innocent roles she played, especially as a child-star and her eventual self-destrucion seemed to fit this piece nicely.

    great piece – even today with all the protection available, there’s no doubt child stars are still vulnerable to financial and emotional exploitation by those they trust
