The inspiration for this poem came from a godly man from Okahola Baptist Church in Hattiesburg, MS. He made a comment about the rapture and said it might just be raining tennis shoes that day. So I thought it would be fun to explore that in poetry.
One bright and early mornin’ as I stepped to go outside
I saw shirts and pants and dresses – fallin’ from the sky
The next thing I knew, it was rainin’ tennie shoes
And what was goin’ on – I didn’t have a clue
I scrambled to catch a pair of two hundred dollar Nikes
But then one hit my head upsetting my greedy psyche
Suddenly I felt a fearsome urge to forget those darned ole things
To find out what all the ruckus was and what it all would mean
So I jumped into my car and turned the radio station on
Hopin’ someone out there might know what the hell was goin’ on!
Nothin’ new was there but the same ole ancient tunes
So I reved up the engine fast tryin’ to get somewhere soon
But then to my surprise, every single road was blocked
With a bunch of empty cars, the doors opened and unlocked
Now my stomach turned inside-out and I was feelin’ kinda feeble
I saw accidents everywhere from all the missin’ people
So I ran as fast as I could back down the street to the house
Where I fully intended to find my always faithful spouse
But when I got back to our room – not a livin’ soul was there
And the clothes she’d just put on were layin’ everywhere!
I dropped down to my knees, glancing at the bedside table
Only to see the Good Book – all those fairy tales and fables!
It was opened to I Thessalonians, the latter part of chapter four
I read, “Up in the clouds, those alive, would meet the Lord!”
As I slowly read those words, I couldn’t believe my eyes
I had thought it was all just a bunch of man-made storybook lies
It was just about enough to scare the hell out of anyone
And I wondered, How in the world could I undo what I’d done?
So I called on Jesus Christ pleading for God’s great mercy
Then suddenly for those Words of Life my soul was awfully thirsty!
I just read and read those stories till I thought I could read no more
It was all so plain to me now, how could, Jesus, I have ignored?
Yes, Jesus sure was real, and the Christ was coming again!
Just like I’d always heard – but never did quite understand
Now the anti-christ is coming too, so I must be very strong
Though I knew the Lord’s return wouldn’t be very long
Seven years will follow now – the great time of tribulation
At first there’ll be a false peace, then the lies and desolations
In the temple of Jerusalem, the beast will take a stand
Pronouncing to the world that he’s the god of man!
Then on the Mount of Olives, the Christ, will set His feet
And those who wouldn’t believe will stand at the judgment seat
So Lord, please have mercy on this poor ole sinner’s soul
When beyond the heavenly blue, the sky rolls back like a scroll
When Your light shines out from east to west and every eyes will see
The Christ who lived and died, coming to set God’s people free
Your triumphant and victorious followers, so glorious, You will bring
And You, no more the flesh-robed man, will be the great and mighty King!
So if one day you find yourself – with a knot on the head like me
Just thank the Lord for those fallen’ Nikes
That rained down out of the Blue!
