A short poem about what romance means in the real world.
Real-Life Romance
Darkness. Moonlight. Love. That’s how she always imagined her fairy-tale romance. However, that is certainly not what she received. He was not her Prince Charming—no roses, no candles.
So this is love…
Cuddling in bed, saying nothing while images flashed across the television screen. It was nothing like her dreams of keeping him close while they whispered to each other with the sounds of Disney fairy tales echoing in the background.
So this is love…
Common activities such as doing homework or reading papers took up their time. There was nothing even remotely romantic about it.
So this is what makes life divine…
She was not wearing a beautiful ball gown. Her hair was nowhere near perfect. She wore no make-up. Yet, not a care stayed in her thoughts about any appearances.
I’m all aglow
Sometimes she wanted to beat him to a pulp. Sometimes she wanted to hold him close in public. It made no logical sense; but for a random reason, it felt alright to her.
And now I know
Not every kiss brought her to her knees. Not every embrace made her melt. Those actions simply felt like daily occurrences that had no meaning.
The key toward heaven is mine
Despite all the nonchalant motions and words, there was a sickness that lodged in her stomach every time that his name was mentioned when she had not seen him for a while.
My heart has wings and I can fly
She thought about him at random times during the day and even during the night. Wondering if he might be thinking of her, she was distracted from everyday tasks.
I’ll touch every star in the sky
There was no real reason why she should be with him. There was no real reason why she should even want to be.
So this is the miracle that I’ve been dreaming of
With everything wrong with her and with everything wrong with him, it did not seem to matter. It was nothing like she expected. It was nothing like she dreamed. However, it might be romantic simply because it’s not. For unknown causes, everything seemed fine. Perhaps it is supposed to be that way…
So this is…love
